“Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he judges even the highest? One person dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease, well nourished in body, bones rich with marrow. Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything good. Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.” Job 21:22-26 NIV
Have you ever felt like life just isn’t fair?
Two people work just as hard as the other. Both devote all of the time and money they can. One succeeds, while the other struggles. Or, it could even be that one person is given everything and never has to work a day in their life, while another is born into nothing and has to crawl through the dirt to get anywhere in life. It’s the making of a villain arc, full of bitterness and resentment. “One person dies in full vigor, completely secure and at ease…. Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having enjoyed anything good.” Those are some pretty strong words, right?
While that struggle in life may lead to resentment, we need to instead put our focus on Jesus. Don’t let the blessings of others lead you down that road – instead, thank God for what you do have and thank Him for the blessings He bestows on others. In the end, “Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them both.” In the end, we can’t take anything with us when we go – all that’s left is an empty body in the ground.
It doesn’t matter how we are blessed on this earth, but instead it matters what we do with what we are given. What are you doing with your blessings?
I close with these lyrics from Seph Schlueter’s song “Counting My Blessings”
“God, I’m still counting my blessings
For all that You’ve done in my life
The more that I look in the details
The more of Your goodness I find
Father on this side of heaven
I know that I’ll run out of time
But I will keep counting my blessings
Knowing I can’t count that high”
